The title sounds easy, until the alarm doesn’t ring so run late for work. Or unscheduled meeting makes us late to the gym. This and other challenges should be looked at as just that…a Challenge. However, it is how we handle it that counts. Don’t stress out over a missed workout….reschedule it for another part of the day, the same you would do for IMPORTANT items.
First ~ Consistency !!
Second ~ You, because You are important !!!
Ever notice how much better you feel when in a routine, doing things you are used to be doing and keeping things regular. This is not to say we shouldn’t push out of our comfort zone from time to time, just that we function best with some routine and regularity in our life.
You will find that most people have some kind of consistency in their lives and do the same things on a regular basis, whether it is conscious or subconscious. It gives a sense of comfort and I know for myself that getting to bed and rising at a certain time as well as training at the time that works best for me makes a profound difference in how I feel. It all comes down to getting in touch with your bodies own rhythms -figuring out whether you are a morning person or a night owl, what you run best on and how you feel at different times of the day.
In terms of regularity there are 4 main areas to address in the field of health and fitness:
- Sleep – Probably the most fundamental as most people cannot get proper sleep unless they have some kind of routine. This may include getting to bed at the same time the majority of the week, having the same pre-bed routine (reading, stretching, music, relaxing) and obviously we all sleep better when in our normal place of sleep (room, bed etc). I have friends who travel a lot for work and they always find it hard to sleep in their hotel rooms, no coincidence here…
- Eating – There is something about eating similar foods day in day out that puts the body at ease. Maybe it is the familiarity that makes digestion easier or that we come to expect food at certain times of the day. Regardless the body functions at its best when eating foods it is familiar with at similar times of the day.
- Exercise – This is a big one and can be seen with professional athletes; ever notice how some athletes seem to excel at night time play and fade if things start earlier in the day? This is because bio-rhythyms of energy and creativity flow at different times for different individuals. For me exercising either early or mid morning works best, If I leave it to the afternoon or night not only does my motivation to exercise fade but so does my performance.
- Social + Work – It is hugely important to have regular social interaction, whether it be with family or friends – having a few regular and familiar interactions every week can make a world of difference in how you feel. The same goes for work, in that certain times of the day or week should be set aside for work and allow you to get into routine. This also makes an important part of the work/play balance and gives you something to look forward to at each end of the spectrum.
Having routine and regularity in our lives has several psychological as well as physical benefits since it allows us to get into sync with what we work best in, giving us something to look forward to, is sure easier on the body, while taking advantage of our natural flow of energy too !!
Let consistency be your friend, remembering to be flexible too.
So enjoy MAP, morning, noon, or night.
It is the continued effort that wins the race folks !!
Best to Everyone !!
